Key features of Fanbeam 5
- Laser-based position reference — Uses accurate time-of-flight laser measurements to determine a vessel’s range and bearing relative to passive reflectors on platforms, rigs, or other vessels.
- Dynamic Positioning integration — Sends positioning data to the vessel’s DP system, which uses it to control thrusters and maintain station.
- High update rate — Typically provides at least two position readings per second.
- Range up to about 2,000 m — Depending on weather, reflector type and operating conditions.
- Range accuracy around 20 cm and angular accuracy around 0.1° according to published Fanbeam Mk5 specifications.
- 360° horizontal scanning — The sensor can scan around the vessel to identify available targets.
- AutoTilt mechanism — Allows the laser to adjust vertically to acquire targets at different elevations; published specifications indicate approximately ±15° in 5° increments.
- Intelligent target identification — Fanbeam Controller 4.0 can reject false reflections from people, deck equipment and other reflective surfaces.
- Range filtering — Operators can define minimum/maximum ranges to eliminate unwanted observations.
- Signal-strength and quality filtering — Helps the DPO select the strongest and most reliable target returns.
- Tracking confidence monitoring — Provides confidence indicators and target-threat information to help operators assess tracking quality.
- Passive reflectors — Does not require powered targets; tube reflectors and prism clusters can be used for different applications.
- Independent redundancy — Can complement DGPS and other DP reference systems, particularly where DGPS performance can deteriorate close to large offshore structures.
- Marine-rated construction — Published specifications list an IP66 scanning head and operating temperature of approximately −20°C to +55°C.
- Fanbeam Controller 4.0 — Provides the operator interface, bird’s-eye-view display, target acquisition, tracking controls, filters, alarms and performance monitoring.
Typical applications
- Fanbeam 5 is commonly used on platform supply vessels, construction vessels, anchor-handling vessels, well-stimulation vessels, accommodation vessels, shuttle tankers and FPSOs for close-range DP operations.
- Important: Fanbeam 5 is a laser positioning/DP reference system, not a conventional radar. It measures position relative to specially designed reflectors.
